Maine State Police say an elderly Coopers Mills woman died this afternoon after her car crossed the centerline of Route 17 and collided head-on with a second vehicle in Windsor.

According to spokesman Stephen McCausland, Helen Hinckley, 76, died at the crash. The driver of the second car, Rita Cushman of Livermore Falls, 66, was seriously injured and transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Trooper Christopher Rogers said Hinckley might have suffered a medical issue prior to the crash, which took place at the Whitefield-Windsor town line on Route 17.  The busy road was closed at the crash site for over two hours, reopening just after 4 p.m.

Initial reports said four vehicles were involved, but Rogers said only Hinckley’s and Cushman’s cars collided. The two other vehicles had stopped at the crash site.
