ROCKPORT – Rockport police reported the following activity Aug 18-24. An arrest or summons does not apply guilt. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Jeremy Stone, 41, of Rockport, was arrested Aug. 18 by Officer Jim Moore for violating his conditions of release after testing positive for marijuana use during a bail check.

According to the police report, Moore received an assault complaint near Stone’s residence in Rockport. While waiting for statements on the assault, Moore saw Stone in the vicinity and conducted a bail check. Stone supplied a urine sample which tested positive for marijuana, which he denied using. Knox County Sheriff Deputy Paul Spear provided back-up at the scene and tested Stone for alcohol use which was negative. Stone’s bail conditions included that he did not use or possess alcohol or illegal drugs, submit to random searches, and not operate a motor vehicle for any reason.

Stone was transported to Knox County Jail by Moore. Since Stone had been charged with manslaughter, the District Attorney’s office filed a motion Aug. 19 to revoke his bail, due to his testing positive for marijuana use. Stone is currently being held without bail, according to the court document.

Stone was indicted by the Knox County Grand Jury in Aug. for manslaughter, aggravated criminal operating under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury or death, and improper plates. Stone pleaded not guilty in Knox County Unified Court on Aug. 24.

Stone was arrested Jan. 30 on charges related to a fatal hit-and-run vehicle accident in Rockland. He was accused of driving while intoxicated and striking Daniel F. Cormier, 35, of Rockland and Owls Head, while Cormier was walking along Camden Street (Route 1) near the Pizza Hut. Two people walking with Cormier were not injured. Cormier was pronounced dead at Pen Bay Medical Center.

According to court documents, Stone was accused of fleeing the scene of the accident. Stone said he wasn’t sure what he hit, that visibility was poor due to the rain, and he panicked and drove off, instead of staying at the scene.

Rockland Police Sgt. Don Finnegan and Detective Russ Thompson arrested Stone at his residence in Rockland, after his location was identified to police by a woman at the accident scene. She told police she had received a call from Stone after the accident saying that he “messed up and might have hit someone on Camden Street.”

Finnegan said that when he spoke with Stone at his home his speech was slow, and that he could smell a strong odor of alcohol. Tests for impairment performed on Stone confirmed that he was impaired. Finnegan also recognized signs consistent with cannabis use, and Stone also admitted that he allegedly consumed marijuana laced candy four days prior to the accident along with consuming  three rum and ginger ale mixed drinks prior to the crash. Stone said that he is prescribed and regularly takes suboxone and klonopin, according to the court document.

Stone will make his next court appearance Oct. 16 for a dispositional conference.
