ROCKLAND — ”It’s just a wonderful time for Rockland,” newly elected mayor Louise MacLellan-Ruf told Rockland residents before the annual lighting of the Christmas tree, Friday, Nov. 27. “It’s a positive time, an optimistic time where all of us are going to show kindness, respect, dignity. Because there’s so much happening in the world, we’re going to counter that. And it’s going to start in Rockland today.”

Residents joined together around the lobster trap Christmas tree at Mildred B. Merrill Park, enjoying cookies and hot chocolate provided by Camden National Bank and Bixby and Co.

As they awaited Santa’s arrival via fire truck, young and old alike listened to carols sung by Tom Ulichny and Hillary Gaudio, while eyeing Main Street for a certain white beard.

2015 Maine Sea Goddess, Jacquelyn Thorbjornson,  and all members of the city council stood on the platform as Rockland Main Street organizer Gordon Page welcomed the audience and thanked the many sponsors and volunteers of the event.

Following Santa’s arrival, many families took pictures in front on the tree before dispersing for the evening.

Tree-lighting ceremonies of the city’s past included a bonfire in the green space of Harbor Park.

One age-old tradition unlikely to fade is that of the children, log-rolling themselves down the Park’s hill. Though the tumbling proved just as aerodynamic in the dark as in the daylight, avoiding fellow rollers was not always successful.

The following day, residents bid on their favorite decorated tree during the Library’s annual fundraising auction. They also toured the Historical Society, analyzing Society Ann Morris’ new book of Rockland while enjoying a special brew of hot chocolate.
