ROCKLAND — Residents of the Methodist Conference Home treated local dogs to handmade toys.

Since July, senior residents have been braiding dog pulls for pets awaiting adoption at the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County (PMHSKC).

"These ought to be the happiest dogs in town," remarked Edith Merrifield as she wove brightly colored prints together. "Tender loving care goes into each toy."

The community-wide project was led by Katie Tarbox, MCH's enrichment coordinator for residents of the independent-living apartments.

"Making toys for shelter dogs was a great way for our senior residents to give back and feel more connected to the community," said Tarbox. "MCH wants to do more projects that keep seniors engaged and involved with the community at large."

On August 19, a group of residents went to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County to deliver the dog toys. Methodist Conference Home resident Joyce Braley was pleased that both the cats and dogs liked the toys and immediately starting playing with them. "I could have taken home half of them," she said. "It was a fun thing to do."

A thank you letter from the shelter to residents of the Methodist Conference Home summed up the importance of the project. "Your handmade dog toys were a hit with our residents. They made a wonderful difference."
