ROCKLAND — After 13 years with the Rockland Police Department, Police Chief Bruce Boucher plans to retire in the next three to four months.

Boucher announced his retirement plans at the Rockland City Council meeting May 9, but did not specify an official date.

He confirmed by telephone May 16 that he had been thinking about retiring last year, but was asked to stay for another year with the transition of the city manager position.

Boucher came to lead the Rockland Police Department in June 2005 after five years as director of security for Bowdoin College in Brunswick. Prior to the college security post, Boucher worked for the Brunswick Police Department for 23 years, rising to the rank of commander.

He was the first external person to be hired as Rockland police chief in at least 50 years, succeeding Chief Alfred Ockenfels who died earlier this year.

Boucher said he is looking forward to his retirement after serving in law enforcement for 41 years.
