ROCKPORT — Robert William Henry Sr., 87, of Rockport, passed away on Sept. 22, 2016, at the Sussman House after several months of declining health. Born in Rockport on Feb. 6, 1929, Bob was the son of Clifford E. and Ethel (Stilphen) Henry.

After a brief service in the U.S. Navy, at the age of 19, Bob opened his first of several restaurants, a diner located in Mexico, Maine.

On July 9, 1951, he married Stella Marie Pound. Bob and Stella lived in Connecticut for many years before moving to Rockport in 1986.

Known as a great chef, Bob owned, operated and managed other restaurants in Connecticut, where he prepared meals for his patrons. Good at conversation, Bob had a knack for drawing people in to enjoy his good food and conversation.

In 1986, Bob and Marie moved from Bolton, Conn., to Rockport, where he enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens. He was a member of the American Legion, and the VFW in Connecticut and Maine.

A Maine boy at heart, Bob lived his life independently until his final days. He was always able to repair or fix most things, made things last for almost forever, resisting new purchases at all costs. For example, he was proud of keeping his old Dodge Dakota on the road many years beyond the normal life expectancy thanks to the invention of duck tape. He enjoyed a good game of cribbage with family and friends and will be remembered for his unique sense of humor.

The Henry family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers at the Sussman House for taking such wonderful care of Bob and the family during time there.

Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

If desired, memorial gifts may be made to the Sussman House, c/o Pen Bay Healthcare Foundation, 6 White Street, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
