VINALHAVEN — Richard A. Dyer, 85, died peacefully Sept. 11, 2015, at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in Vinalhaven on Feb. 1, 1930, he was the son of Leslie and Hazel Rogers Dyer. Educated locally he was a graduate of Vinalhaven High School.

Following high school, Richard earned a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Maine at Orono. For four years he served honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Later he began a teaching career, at the Mount Missionary School in New Hampshire, where he taught theology.

Richard had a passion for art and was talented in many genres. After attending art school in Rhode Island, he returned to his beloved Vinalhaven, where he was an active member of the Vinalhaven Theater. There he served as a makeup man, as well as scenery designer. He also put his talents to good use and indulged his love of politics by painting signs for local politicians. Music was a big part of his life, and he will be remembered for his talented tenor voice.

Richard had a soft spot in his heart for animals, especially his beloved cats.

Predeceased by three siblings, Carolyne Bullawell, Leslie Dyer Jr. and George B. Dyer; Richard is survived by his brothers, Edward F. Dyer of Fairfield, Ohio, Phillip Dyer of Vinalhaven and Joseph Dyer of Sheffield, Conn.; a sister, Ada Mae Williams; and many nieces and nephews, including a niece, Joy Woodcock of Vinalhaven.

A graveside celebration of his life, with military honors, will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 11:00 a.m. at Carver Cemetery on Vinalhaven. Mr. Robert Candage will officiate. Honors will be presented by the Woodcock, Cassie, Coombs American Legion Post No. 18.
