WARREN – Richard Ernest DeMass Sr., 73, passed away peacefully July 23, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, at the Sussman House in Rockport following a brief illness.

Born in Rockland on Aug. 21, 1942, he was the son of Ernest and Lucille Harper DeMass. Educated locally, he was a 1960 graduate of Rockland High School.

A member of the Armed Forces, Richard served for 20 years before being honorably discharged in 1983.

He began his career as a driver for R & H Taxi Service. He also drove for Coastal Transportation for many years. In later years Richard worked for Creek Hill Gas Station before retiring to enjoy the best of life.

He was an avid deer hunter and gun collector. He also loved road trips and driving. He married his second wife, Helen Katterheinrich, on Oct. 27, 2007.

Richard was predeceased by his father, Ernest DeMass; his mother and step-father, Lucille DeMass Brann and Alton Brann; a sister, Marie; and a grandson, Dillon DeMass. He is survived by his wife, Helen; three sisters, Carolyn, Janice and Diane and their spouses; a brother, Ronald and his spouse; a sister-in-law and her family; a brother-in-law and his spouse; his six children, Brenda, Richard, Lynne, Nadine, Christopher and Patricia and their spouses; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

At Richard's request no services will be held.

His family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and aides at the Sussman House for the wonderful care they gave their dad during his short stay; as well as for the kindness shown to the entire family. It was very much appreciated.
