WARREN — Rex Wayne Thomas, 69, of Warren, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 25, 2016, at the VA Hospital in Boston, while dealing with complications from a recent surgery. Rex was born Aug. 17, 1947, to Wendall and Hazel Weaver Thomas of Thomaston.

Rex attended Georges Valley High School until he joined the U.S. Army in 1968. He served in the Army for four years and was honorably discharged in 1972. After returning home from the Vietnam War, Rex completed high school by earning his GED certificate in 1972. He worked for Crowe Rope and Van Baalens. Rex also attended the Technical School in Rockland and earned his certified nursing assistant and culinary specialist degrees. He then worked privately for a family on Islesboro, and also worked as a cook at the school on the island. When Rex retired from his work on Islesboro, he returned to Thomaston and eventually bought his home in Warren.

In 1973 Rex and Pauline Tabbutt began their lifelong partnership. They were married in 1977 and have lived their life and relationship on their own terms to those close to them. We loved and appreciated their dedication to each other, even when life got tough.

Rex spent his retirement enjoying the things he loved the most. He and Polly spent a lot of time keeping their home, gardens, and animals beautiful and happy. He loved camping and finding good deals at yard sales.

Rex was predeceased by his parents; and his half sister, Jerry. He is survived by his life partner, Pauline Tabbutt Thomas and her family; his half-sister, Lorraine Merrill of Freeport; and his half-brother, Calvin Roberts of Thomaston; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. at Village Cemetery in Thomaston. The Rev. Ann Roundy will officiate.

Hall's of Thomaston has care of the arrangements.
