The Sanctuary Gallery at the Rockland Congregational Church is delighted to welcome Tenants Harbor artist Chuck Paine on Sunday, August 13. The opening reception for his new show, “Studies of Sail and Sea,” will start at 11:15 a.m. with refreshments and piano music by Sue Pedretti. This show focuses on Paine's studies for his larger paintings featured in the exhibit. A selection of small studies also will be displayed and available for purchase.“Chuck's work appeals to me because the viewer can easily feel the power of the sea and the grace of the boat,” commented curator Judy Waterman.

Paine and his identical twin brother Art are lifelong artists. When they were 15, they received scholarships for weekend art classes at the Rhode Island School of Design. Chuck went on to study engineering at Brown University. In 1973 he opened his own business, C.W. Paine Yacht Design. During this time, he perfected his drawing skills with pencil, pen and computer. Over 1000 yachts were built to Paine's designs.

In recent years, he has rediscovered his youthful passion for fine art drawing and painting. He spends most of his time working in oil and watercolor and in teaching. “I feel strongly that if one has achieved a measure of success as an artist, one is obliged to pass it on,” said Paine. “For this reason I offer inexpensive lessons to aspiring artists in midcoast Maine.”

Paine's show will hang until September 14. The church is located at 180 Limerock Street, is handicapped-accesible, and parking is on the upper level.
