CUSHING — Reino E. Saastamoinen, 94, died peacefully Oct. 9, 2014 at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in Quincy, Mass., on April 27, 1920, he was the son of Matti and Hanna Malinen Saastamoinen. Educated in Thomaston, he was a 1939 graduate of Thomaston High School.

In 1941, Reino married Estelle Moore in Thomaston. Together they made their home in Cushing. Mrs. Saastamoinen passed away in 1996.

For most of his career Reino was employed with the Maine State Prison, where he managed the Prison Showroom. Reino retired from there in 1984. For many years he also owned a hen farm in Cushing.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Saastamoinen enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking care his farm. Reading was also a favorite pastime.

He was predeceased by his wife; a son, David O. Saastamoinen; and a brother, Walfred Saastamoinen.

Reino is survived by his son, Donald E. Saastamoinen; two grandsons and their spouses, Ian and Jodi Saastamoinen and Han and Christine Saastamoinen; as well as four great-grandchildren, Delia Saastamoinen, Isaiah and India Backiel, and Oscar Saastamoinen.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. Private interment will be at Norton Cemetery in Cushing.
