Preseason softball and baseball get under way

Mariners, Panthers hold multi-team play days
Mon, 04/21/2014 - 9:00am

Knox and Waldo County softball and baseball teams continued preseason scrimmage games April 19, with Medomak Valley holding a softball play day and Oceanside holding its second baseball play day.

At Medomak, however, Panther girls were not able to play because so many of the players are on a class trip to Costa Rica and not due to return until after this coming week’s games. Oceanside was able to get some games in with Bucksport, Hermon and Messalonskee, from Fairfield. Other teams at the play day included Erskine Academy, which is in South China, and Lincoln Academy of Newcastle.

The Panthers could have positioned junior varsity players to a game, but Coach Richard Vannah said he did not want other teams to travel to the school to play teams not so competitive. Medomak decided to hold the play day regardless so that the teams would not seek other tournaments in the future.

Over in Thomaston, the Oceanside baseball team held its second play day, this one featuring the Mariners, Camden Hills, Brunswick and Messalonskee.

The season kicks in Wednesday, April 23, for baseball for the Mariners and Windjammers when they meet at Oceanside West for a 4 p.m. game, while the Panthers of Medomak will open Friday, April 25 at Thomaston against Oceanside.

In softball, the Windjammers will travel to Thomaston Wednesday to start the season and Medomak will open on Friday, April 25, with Oceanside.
