CAMDEN — Camden and Rockport Police with the assistance of the Camden Fire Department and the Maine State Police are investigating an early morning fatal accident involving a dump truck and a pedestrian on Rt. 1 near the Camden/Lincolnville town line.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:22 a.m., according to a release issued by Camden-Rockport Police Chief Randy Gagne.

A motorist heading south reported seeing someone lying in the roadway. The motorist stopped ahead of the subject and attempted to alert a dump truck that was also heading south. The operator of the dump truck could not stop in time and struck the subject lying in the road.

Travis Payne, 35, of Plymouth, Maine was the operator of the 2003 Kenworth dump truck. Visibility in the area at the time of the accident was poor due to heavy rain and fog.

Members of the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle and Accident Reconstruction Units assisted at the scene. The accident remains under investigation at this time.
