WASHINGTON — Pixie A. Day, 88, of Washington, died Dec. 7, 2014, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta. She was born in Waterbury, Conn., on July 18, 1926, to Frank and Ernestine (Sherman) Garrity.

She grew up in Connecticut and attended local schools. She moved to Tenants Harbor in 1963.

Pixie started goat farming in Tenants Harbor and she was very devoted to her goats. She also worked at GTE Sylvania in Waldoboro and for the state of Maine. In 1978 she moved to Sleigh Bell Farm in Washington, where she bred and raised grand champion goats. She sold goat cheese at several farmers markets in the area. She found great joy and love in her goats and they were with her until the end. She was a hard working and dedicated woman. She could get more done in one day than most would in a week.

Pixie donated goats to Russia through the Heifer Project. She traveled to Russia several times and helped Russian families learn to milk the goats and make cheeses. While in Russia, she befriended a little girl and helped her get adopted into the U.S.

She enjoyed hiking in Connecticut and at Mt. Katahdin in Maine. She was a member of the Dairy Goat Association of Maine and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Farmingdale. She will be missed by her family and by her special friends, Becky, Brian, Helen and Mary, who helped her on the farm; and her special Russian friends, Nadya and Alex.

Pixie is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Astle and her husband, Clinton "Mike" Astle, of Bar Harbor; her son, Kevin Bauer of East Haven, Conn.; her grandchildren, Cassie Astle of Bangor, Michael Astle and his wife, Belinda, of Bar Harbor, and Aaron Astle and his companion, Monique Boutaugh, of Ellsworth; and her great-grandchildren, Tristan Elia of Bangor, Emma Astle of Bar Harbor and Cameron Astle of Ellsworth.

A service to celebrate Pixie's life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4 Hasson St. in Farmingdale. The burial will follow at Day Family Cemetery in Washington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Pixie's memory may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home.
