The Penobscot Bay YMCA recently completed a major renovation at the Rockport facility.  According to Theo Berez, Wellness Director at the Y: “we added 10 new, easy to use, strength training machines and three new cardio machines which consist of Cybex Arc Trainers and a Precor AMT.  We also expanded our free weight equipment that includes two full power racks and several new benches to allow more lifting options, versatility and space for members. The new rubberized flooring was a key addition and upgrade to the Center.”

More importantly, these changes included pieces of equipment that are more compatible for those with limited mobility.

Troy Curtis, CEO at the Y, said: “This renovation was needed to support the changing demographics in our region. We are seeing more and more older individuals at our Y and it’s important that our equipment is user friendly to all of our members.”

In addition to meeting this new need, the Y Board of Directors felt that replacing aging equipment and flooring would support the recent membership growth at the association.

Leslie Eaton, President of the YMCA Board of Directors, said: “Funding for this redevelopment project was unanimously approved at our March board meeting and combined both private donations and YMCA Building Reserve Funds. Future plans include adding a comprehensive air conditioning system that will cool the strength training area, running track and gymnasium.”

Fundraising efforts to support all of these upgrades is currently underway. If interested in joining the Rockport or Rockland branches, individuals may do so for a limited time for just $1.
