CAMDEN — Two New York City residents charged by Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick with felony theft and burglary, following a series of business break-ins in July 2017, made their initial appearance in Knox County Unified Court Jan. 22.

Talicia Martins, 21, of Manhattan, N.Y., and Jacob Flanagan, 20, also of Manhattan, both appeared before Judge Susan Sparaco. Their attorneys had filed two previous motions to continue in September and November, which extended their clients’ hearing dates to January, since they were still undergoing substance abuse treatment programs in residential facilities.

At the Jan. 22 hearing, Flanagan and Martins were individually charged with three counts of burglary and felony theft. The pair did not enter pleas during the hearing.

Additionally, their bail conditions were amended to now include random searches, and the defendants were ordered not to return to the Camden Cone, Smoothie Shack and Francine’s Bistro, the three businesses they allegedly burglarized in July.

Flanagan and Martins will appear in court again on March 29 for a dispositional conference with the judge, the prosecuting Assistant District Attorney and their individual attorneys. The purpose of the conference, which is closed to the public, is to discuss the merits of the case, the evidence presented and defense for Flanagan and Martins.

Flanagan is represented Attorney Eric Morse, of Strout and Payson in Rockland. Martins’ attorney is George Dilworth, of Drummond Woodsum in Portland.

Andrick and Camden Police Officer Brook Hartshorn began talking to business owners and piecing together the information after receiving several calls Monday, July 31, from employees of businesses discovering evidence of forced entry, as well as cash missing from drawers.

Martins was arrested in the evening of Aug. 3 on Chestnut Street in Camden. Flanagan was arrested on Aug. 4 after he went to the police station.

They were transported to the Knox County Jail where cash bail was set at $1,500 apiece.
