    Page to Screen – Irish style

    On Tuesday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. the 1992 film version of Roddy Doyle’s bookThe Snapper will be shown at the Belfast Free Library as part of the Library’s summer series Page to Screen- Irish Style. All are welcome to attend.

    The Snapper is set in working class north Dublin, where Doyle grew up and lives.

    The film received critical acclaim as one of the year’s funniest films and stars Colm Meaney as the father and Tina Kellegher as the oldest daughter with a secret.


     

    On Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m. the discussion will be on John B. Keane’s play and film,The Field . Directed by Jim Sheridan and released in 1990 the film captures the powerful attachment to land and sensitivity to relationship found in a small village in the Southwest of Ireland; starring Richard Harris who received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Bull McCabe.


     

    On Tuesday, Sept. 2, 6:30 pm Christy Brown’s autobiography, My Left Foot will be discussed and the 1989 film adaptation, also directed by Sheridan, includes a spectacular Oscar winning performance by Daniel Day-Lewis will be shown on Thursday Sept. 4.

     

    The series will be facilitated by Drs. Del Hickey and David Andrews, retired academics who embraced the Irish culture while living and working in Ireland for six years. They fell in love with the craic, the music, the literature and the films.
