Owls Head Fire Dept. recognizes members at annual supper

    OWLS HEAD — The Owls Head Volunteer Fire Company held their annual firefighter appreciation supper Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Owls Head Community Building for fire personnel and their families. The food for the 60 people attending was provided by Miranda's Café in Rockland. Along with the supper it featured games, gifts and piñata's for the firefighters children.

    During the event Chief Frank Ross and Assistant Chief John Gamage presented Company President Timothy Sternberg with the Company Award for his extensive work last year with the board of directors and for his many years as president of the Corporation.

    Lieutenant James Philbrook was presented the Officer of the Year, Lt. Philbrook has been nearly every officer in the department except fire chief in his 36 year career stint, according to a news release.

    Firefighter Hunter Schade recieved the Chiefs Award and Firefighter. In 2014 FF Schade took the Firefighter I and II course, earned his Forest Fire Certification then went to Oregon to fight forest fires.  He is now attending the University of Maine studying engineering.

    Firefighter David Geddis was presented the Firefighter if the Year Award. He has steadily improved his studies as a firefighter in the department, continually wanting more training. In August he stepped in as company secretary, filling the void left when John Gamage was appointed assistant chief.

    Deputy Chief Donald Pierce could not be present as he is now serving as second mate on a merchant ship delivering needed goods to the African Continent. He is expected back in February.

    The Company has seen a steady improvement in morale and membership during latter part of 2014, and is presently comprised of 24 men and women.

    The department is always looking for more personnel from firefighters and police, to auxiliary support members ages 17 and up, according to a news release.
