CAMDEN - Owen W. “Chick” Bailey, 90, died May 31, 2014, at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough. His wife, Grete S. Bailey, 86, died a few days later on June 6, 2014, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

Owen was born in Melrose, Mass., on Sept. 30, 1923. He was a graduate of Colby College and held a Master of Arts from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he went on to teach from 1948 to 1951. He married the late Ramona Tower and joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1953, serving as an intelligence officer for 20 years. During World War II he was a Navy musician and in the Korean War, he was a gunnery officer on the U.S.S. Wisconsin. He worked on a military project in Washington, D.C., and was a recruiter for the C.I.A. Chick and Ramona moved to Owls Head upon Chick's retirement in 1975; Ramona died in 1983.

Grete was born in New York City on June 28, 1927. She married Wilfred A. Slader in 1948. They moved to Crown Point, Ind., where they raised their three children. Wilfred died in 1963. Her dream was to attend college and in 1969 this dream was realized when she received her Bachelor of Arts in education from Indiana University. She and her teenage children relocated to Camden, in 1969, where Grete began her career as an elementary teacher in South Thomaston. Grete retired from teaching in 1987 and then became a court appointed special advocate for children.

Chick and Grete met while living in Camden and married June 22, 1985. They were actively involved in their community and cherished time spent with their many friends and neighbors. Chick served on the board of the Camden Health Care Center and later volunteered at Pen Bay Medical Center. He was a member of the Lincolnville Band and the Stan Catell Jazz Band. Grete enjoyed spending time taking walks with her dog, and frequented art showings and opera performances. She was an active participant in several Elder Hostels, traveling to Greece, Israel and England. She was involved with the Camden Garden Club and also volunteered at Pen Bay Medical Center. Grete and Chick enjoyed time with their children and grandchildren. They were greatly loved and will be deeply missed.

Grete and Chick are survived by their three children, Jess Slader and his wife, Janet, of Union, Gretchen Vasiliauskas and her husband, Arnie, of Ocean Park and P. Christian Slader and his wife, Christine, of Yarmouth. They are also survived by seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church UCC, 55 Elm St. in Camden, with the Rev. Kevin Pleas officiating.
