Annual arrival of Christmas tree, wreaths

Our Town Belfast brings holidays to the downtown

BELFAST — Anyone traveling Belfast’s downtown this week likely has noticed the addition of festive holiday decor, including a number of wreaths and one-larger-than-life Christmas tree.

The decor, along with community activities, is provided courtesy of Our Town Belfast, the community nonprofit dedicated to growing and sustaining Belfast’s historic downtown.

The towering tree was donated by Holmes Greenhouse & Floral Shop, according to Marjorie Gormley, Our Town Belfast’s interim director and longtime volunteer.

The annual holiday wreaths were supposed to go up the day after tree delivery, but a rainy forecast altered the plans.

Each of the wreaths is hung with a bright red, and perfectly tied bow, all of which were tied at a bow-making party earlier in the month, by a team of 23 volunteers.

The tree itself was selected by Belfast Ward 5 Councillor Mike Hurley, and Norm Poirier, of Belfast’s Parks and Recreation Department. Both have been involved with Our Town Belfast since its inception, according to Gormley.

Sitting in a massive cement stand, the tree is also protected by two cement blockades, designed to protect against wind, which knocked over a previous tree.

Though currently undecorated, the tree will soon have lights, though they won’t be lit until next month’s tree lighting ceremony, which takes place at Post Office Square.

That event, which takes place around 4:30 p.m., Dec. 2, will not only feature the lights being turned on, but also a variety of activities.

From caroling high schoolers, to hot cocoa and cookies, to an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, there is something for children and adults.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive to the event in a fire truck, and for those who aren’t able to get enough time with the fabled couple at the event, children can also visit them at Key Bank following their Post Office Square appearance.

Starting this weekend, there will also be a mailbox directly to the North Pole erected at Post Office Square, where letters to Santa can be dropped off. Gormley said any letter to Santa dropped in the box can expect a reply.
