SOUTH THOMASTON —A South Thomaston woman was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after a Mack truck failed to see she was stopped to make a turn and crashed into her.

Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Sprague responded to the accident on Route 131 at 4:15 p.m. Sept. 30. According to the report, Audrey McClure, 59, was traveling south on Route 131 when she signaled and stopped to left into a private driveway. McClure was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Spark.

The driver behind her, Christopher Bowles, 37, of Belfast, was operating a 1997 Mack truck owned by Rockport Granite. According to the deputy, Bowles realized too late that McClure was stopped and he attempted to avoid hitting her car from behind. While applying the brakes, which caused him to skid approximately 250 feet, the truck swerved left as McClure was turning, striking the car in the driver’s side door.

Route 131 was closed for about 75 minutes, while South Thomaston fire and emergency medical services crews worked to free McClure from her crumpled car. McClure was eventually extricated and transported by South Thomaston Ambulance to Pen Bay Medical Center for minor injuries.

Sprague said that Bowles was uninjured. An investigator with Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement was called to the scene regarding the truck Bowles was driving.

Emergency crews cleared the scene and reopened the road just after 5:30 p.m.
