THOMASTON – The Oceanside girls varsity and JV teams had all day to play as they started at 11 a.m. on a school holiday and after the varsity game the JV squad was able to get a full 80-minute game in, a rarity at best.

When the games had ended the Mariners had handed the Warriors a pair of losses. The varsity battled hard for a 2-0 win while the JV came out strong taking a 5-1 win and showed why they are undefeated this season just as the varsity team is.

The varsity goes to 11-0-1 on the season while the JV are now 10-0-1. The varsity is No 1. in the Maine Principals’ Associations Heal Point Standings (11-0-1, Tournament Index 126.9898). Hermon is in second place (9-0-2, TI 103.0612). The varsity Mariners have two regular season games left, Thursday, Oct. 15 they will host Mount View and on Monday, Oct. 19 they will travel to Belfast.

VARSITY GAME
Oceanside 2, Nokomis 0… The Mariners and Warriors battled for 80-minutes on an incredible October day with temperatures near 70 degrees and crystal clear blue skies. Each team's defense did not want to allow even a shot on goal. That was how the entire game played out. That intensity that both teams played with never let up and in the end Oceanside only had seven shots and Nokomis three. Very small numbers for a varsity contest.

Gabby Simmons, Lauren Hatch, Haylie Witham and Emma Lee were outstanding in the backfield only allowing three shots past them for keeper Kalyn Grover to handle which she did each time to record her 10th shutout of the year. All three of the Nokomis shots came from defensive and midfield players, the forwards for the Warriors did not get a shot off because of the Mariner defense.

Offensively the Brooks twins, Jillian, and Kelsey scored the goals and cousin Makenna provided the assist on both goals.

In the first half at 29:59 M. Brooks placed the corner kick perfectly allowing J. Brooks to put a foot on it and just run it in.

The second half goal came at 15:25 again on a corner from M. Brooks that took a couple of bounces off players going into the air where K. Brooks drove it past the keeper with a beautiful header for the 2-0 lead.

Nokomis was a very tough, physical team that came out strong taking the Mariners out of their game for a few minutes until they regrouped and started to play the way they are capable of performing. J. Brooks and Lily McVetty did an outstanding job in the midfield battling for 50/50 balls and winning most of them.

Grover had three saves on three shots in goal for the Mariners while her counterpart Shayla Kelley was also very tough making five saves on seven excellent shots for the Warriors. The Mariners held the edge in corners 3-1 and direct kicks 3-2.

Both teams had 41 throw ins, most in the midfield area. The balls that got by went out of bounds giving the Mariners seven goal kicks while Nokomis had just five.

JV GAME
Oceanside 5, Nokomis 1… The Mariner junior varsity showed the fans in attendance that the future of soccer at Oceanside is now on the JV’s and that winning at the varsity level is contagious leaving this outstanding JV team 9-0-1 on the season.

Oceanside scored four times in the first half and once in the second. Casey Benner started things off at 32:55 on a direct kick that went over the keepers head and into the back of the net. The second goal came from Lauren Arsenault at 27:04 who found herself wide open and shot the ball to the right corner hard enough that the goalie could not even move before the ball was in the net. Hope Butler had an assist on the play. Abby Veilleux scored at 24:51 on a corner kick delivered by Lauren Arsenault.

Nokomis got on the scoreboard at 10:28 on a penalty kick that the Warrior player blasted far left of keeper Kalli Grover to make it 3-1.

The final score of the first half came from Bea Corbi at 6:12 with an assist from Butler for the 4-1 halftime lead for the Mariners.

In the second half, the only goal came at 7:55 when Arsenault from the right-hand side finished an excellent run with a shot over the head of the goalie for her second goal of the game.

The Mariners outshot the Warriors 30-6. Grover had five saves on six shots for the win while her counterpart had 15 saves on 30 shots.  The Mariners held the advantage in corners 4-2.

In all of the JV games, this season the Mariners have outscored their opponents 39-7.
