The Informed Young Leaders Series completes its third year of PechaKucha-style presentations by local high school students addressing vital political issues.

Students from two Midcoast schools -- Medomak Valley HS (Waldoboro) and Oceanside HS (Rockland) – will be delivering PechaKucha-style presentations (20 slides, 20 seconds per slide) on a wide range of subjects, including 'Foreign Policy and Global Terrorism', 'Eminent Domain', 'Impact of Social Media on Politics', 'Gerrymandering', "Women's Rights', 'Healthcare' and 'Cyberterrorism'.

The event is taking place on Tuesday, December 5, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Oceanside High School auditorium in Rockland.

As always, this event is open to the public with no admission charge, and refreshments will be available.

The Informed Young Leaders Series has received praise from lawmakers, teachers, administrators and parents alike, including Gov. LePage, Senator Susan Collins.

"This is our sixth event for Medomak students, and we have no shortage of students wanting to present, especially now since students now receive academic credit for their participation," said Jake Newcomb, the social studies teacher from Medomak Valley High School. "The students really like the 'Open Issues' format because it allows them to explore issues that are of particular interest to them, and they have chosen some very interesting and complex issues to present."

Katie Nicholls of Oceanside High School echoed Jake Newcomb's comments, saying, 'This fall's program offers students to dig deep into subjects about which they are passionate. In addition to having students who have presented before, this year we have some 'second generation' presenters, including siblings of former presenters and new incoming students. We're all excited about the format for this fall's event.

As part of the ongoing program, students will have rehearsed with members of the Informed Young Leaders team of community mentor advisors prior to the event.

Eastern Tire & Rubber and The First Bank are once again the lead sponsors for this year's program, Courier Publications/Village Soup is the media sponsor for the upcoming events.
