Oceanside battles back to keep streak alive

THOMASTON – The Oceanside baseball team has now won 12 straight games after starting the season 0-2.

With the win Wednesday against Morse 9-6 the Mariners are now 12-2 and they are in second place in the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings. Undefeated Old Town is in first place in the Eastern Class B standing with a perfect 14-0 season thus far.

Wednesday the Mariners had to fight to get ahead in this one. Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Mariners plated four more runs to take a 6-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Morse would not go away. Trailing 9-3 the Shipbuilders dug in and scored three runs to make it a game before Logan Sheridan came in with one out in the seventh to earn his first high school save on the mound.

The fifth inning was crucial for the Mariners. Zac Roman doubled to get things going. After Caleb Jacob reached on an error, Nick Mazurek was walked and with the bases loaded Mazlin Higbee doubled scoring Roman and Jacob, but Mazurek was thrown out at the plate. Zach Peaco then singled to score Higbee. Travis Frye then singled follow by a base hit from Walker Ranney that scored Peaco with the fourth run of the inning.

Jacob got the start for the Mariners and went 6 1/3 innings allowing six runs, four earned on nine hits with three strikeouts. Sheridan pitched 2/3 of an inning with one walk to close out the game.

Jacob Cressey, Nick Doughty and Trevor Drouin pitched for Morse allowing nine runs, eight earned on 15 hits and four walks while striking out one.

Leading the Mariners at the plate were, Mazurek with his fifth home run of the season; Roman double, two singles; Ranney double, two singles; and Frye with two singles.

Repeat hitters for the Shipbuilders were Zach Holbrook and Brendon Harper with two singles each.

Next up for the Mariners is Friday with a trip to So. China to play Erskine Academy.
