Oceanside again too much for Camden Hills

Mariners, Windjammers provide exciting play for solid fan base

ROCKPORT – The Camden Hills girls lacrosse team hosted crosstown rival Oceanside to Don Palmer Field for their second meeting of the season.

And just like the first time the Mariner offense and tough defense were too much for Camden Hills as they fell 14-8 to the visitors.

Oceanside goes to 9-1 on the season and is currently No. 1 in the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings in Eastern Class B. Camden Hills falls to 4-6 and is currently No. 7 in the standings. The top seven spots make the playoffs. Both teams have to games left in the regular season.

Tuesday the game started out close with Oceanside up 4-3 with about 12 minutes left in the first half when Oceanside scored three in a row while only giving up one more for the 7-3 halftime lead.

The Oceanside defense was strong most of the game, however in the second half, at one point the Windjammers scored four goals in a row waking up the Mariners defense and getting them back into the game to finish up with the 14-8 win.

Offensively for the mariners, Brittany Rytky (2 goals, 2 assists), Lily Vachon (2 goals), Rebekah Freeman (2 goals, assist), Kelsey Brooks (2 goals, assist), Jillian Brooks (2 goals, assist), Alexis Pine (goal, assist), Sierra Beal (goal, assist), Janelle Fowlie (goal) and Abbey Lacasse (goal).

Bailee Cox was impressive in goal with nine saves on 17 shots for the win.

For Camden Hills, For Camden Hills, Hannah Wincklhofer (3 goals) and Katherine Orne, Willow Grinnell, Emily Bowen, Samantha Zwecker and Olivia Powers (goal each).

Sara Schaefer had five saves on 19 shots from the Mariners in the loss.

Oceanside plays again Thursday when they host Erskine Academy and finish the regular season with always tough Morse of Bath at McMann Stadium Wednesday, June 3.

For Camden Hills, they will host Winslow Thursday, May 28 and will travel to Gardiner next Wednesday, June 3 for the final regular season game.

Girls lacrosse playoffs start June 10 with quarterfinals. Semifinals will be at the high seed June 13 and the regional championship June 17. The State High School girls lacrosse championship is set for June 20 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. Time to be determined.
