GRAY — The National Weather Service this morning issued a winter storm warning for the Midcoast, with moderate to heavy snowfall to continue in the afternoon.

The winter storm warning is in effect until noon today, Wednesday.

Schools that had earlier announced late openings, are now mostly closed around the region. Reports from drivers are that roads are slippery, and visibility has been reduced.

This latest storm is forecast to deliver a "quick" 4 to 8 inches of snow to the Midcoast and Penobscot Bay area this morning, with snow expected to end by afternoon. On the bright side, this fast-mover will bring "rapid clearing" during the afternoon.

"Snow covered roads and low visibilities will lead to dangerous travel conditions," according to the NWS in its 8:10 a.m. update.

Winds will be northwest, 5-10 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. Temperatures will be in the lower 20s Fahrenheit.

In an 8:30 a.m. email from the state Department of Public Safety, Maine State Police have shut down Interstate 85, between Newport and Bangor, for a crash involving more than 20 vehicles. The crash has shutdown both northbound lanes and motorists should take the exits in Etna and Newport to avoid the crash site.

According to the release, at least a half dozen people have been injured. There is no immediate word on the condition of the injured. The crash involves many cars, a school bus and a tractor trailer. The collisions began around 7:30 in heavy snow that was falling in the area. The Interstate will be closed at the crash site for several hours.
