Novelist Barbara Lawrence reads from her ‘The Other Island: Ben's Story’

CAMDEN — Love and fish? Novelist Barbara Kent Lawrence explores both in her new novel, The Other Island: Ben's Story.

Camden resident Dr. Barbara Kent Lawrence's new novel has just been released. The book is a sequel to her 2013 debut Islands of Time.

On Sunday, May 21 at 2 p.m. the Camden Library will host a book signing, reading and reception.

The Other Island is as much a reflection and refraction of her first novel as it is a sequel. Islands of Time traced the love affair between Becky Granger, a summer visitor to Mount Desert Island, and Ben Bunker, a year-round resident of Little Cranberry Island — from Becky's point of view. In The Other Island, Lawrence gives voice to Ben's side of the romance: "She's told you her story," he states at the novel's start. "Now I'll tell you mine. They are wound up in me like the way I was in her from the moment I met her."

In The Other Island, Ben surveys his life, going back to the moment he met Becky, then weaving through his Coast Guard service, his marriage to another woman, and the tumult into which his life was thrown when Becky returned to Mount Desert Island. Ben, a fisherman and marine biologist, also reveals the pressures on fishermen, their families and communities from the enormous changes in the fisheries of the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank. Lawrence's writing paints Mount Desert and Little Cranberry with a clear-eyed knowledge and obvious love of place.
