BELFAST — A Northport man was tased and arrested following a Nov. 25 traffic stop, according to Belfast Police Sergeant Brian Lunt.

Christopher J. Laurence, 35, has been charged with operating under the influence, refusing to submit to arrest or detention (with physical force), refusing to stop for a police officer, aggravated operating after suspension, violating conditions of release, and possession of a scheduled drug.

Laurence came to the attention of police when Officer Dan Thompson, who was patrolling at the time, witnessed him driving the wrong way down Pendleton Street, police said.

Thompson initiated a traffic stop, but Laurence failed to pull over, police said. The officer followed as Thompson traveled up Main Street, before turning onto Waldo Avenue. He eventually pulled his vehicle into the Waterfall Arts parking lot where he came to a stop, Lunt said.

After stopping, Laurence, who appeared intoxicated, exited his vehicle and confronted Thompson, who attempted to place him under arrest, police said. Laurence allegedly resisted arrest, with Thompson ultimately taking him to the ground, though he was able to get back up.

Sgt Lunt arrived on scene as backup during the scuffle and Laurence was taken to the ground a second time, with Lunt trying to handcuff him during the struggle, police said.

The officers said they were unable to handcuff a still combative Laurence, who was ultimately tased by Lunt and handcuffed.

Once taken to Waldo County officers learned that Laurence’s license was currently revoked as a habitual offender, and under bail conditions, leading to the charge of violating conditions of release.

Schedule W drugs were also found on Laurence when he was searched at the jail.
