BELFAST — The First Church in Belfast, United Church of Christ, has started construction of new front entrance steps, a gathering place and walkway.

The church is in Belfast's Historic District at the corner of Church and Spring streets. The new walkway and steps will be an historically appropriate entry that, at the same time, will enhance the First Church welcome to all in the community, said a news release from the church.

The First Church building is an icon in Belfast with its federal style architecture. The bell tower and clock provide a beacon to the surrounding community. The work underway will provide visitors with new handicapped entry into the church building, a new gathering place to celebrate weddings, baptisms, confirmations and church and community activities and will serve as a visible welcome to the greater community.

The church building is nearing its 200th anniversary in 2018, a time when members and friends will reflect on the past and rededicate themselves to the future.

Pastors Kate Winters and Joel Krueger said the project is made possible through the support of members and friends and the Estate of Elizabeth Breslin, a long-time member of the congregation.

Camden architect Christopher Glass provided guidance on historical significance in design and Belfast's GOLogic provided design and construction expertise.

First Church in Belfast is an open and affirming congregation; firstchurchinbelfast.org/, or join the congregation, Sundays at 10 a.m., coffee hour to follow.
