NOTE: Due to the weather-related issues from Hurricane Sandy, this presentation was rescheduled from its previous date of 10/30.
CAMDEN– Although delayed slightly due to Hurricane Sandy, Dr. Barbara MacDonald will give her presentation, “Safe and effective complementary Naturopathic and Chinese therapies during and after breast cancer treatment,” on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Camden Whole Health in Camden. The talk will begin at 6 p.m. and will focus on the benefits of naturopathic care in cancer treatment.
A growing number of women are being diagnosed and successfully treated for breast cancer, and many women are living healthy lives with a history of breast cancer. According to several studies conducted in 2010, the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) within this patient population has increased from 60 to 88 percent. Those who are in breast cancer treatment now, or have completed it years prior, use complementary care for various reasons: to avoid negative drug, nutrient or herbal interactions that can interfere with surgery or treatment, to help with healing and pain reduction after surgery; to reduce of side effects and toxicity of some treatments; to enhance the effect of conventional treatments without interfering; and to hasten recovery and healing after treatment is completed. During treatment, complementary breast cancer care is provided by a licensed naturopathic doctor or other health-care provider with specialized training.
Dr. Barbara MacDonald is a licensed naturopathic doctor and a doctor of Chinese medicine, as well as a member of the oncology association of naturopathic physicians.
