Nebraska woman knocked down by Camden Village Green treated for minor injuries

CAMDEN — A 30-year-old Nebraska woman, who had been walking with her husband near the intersection of Chestnut and Elm streets in Camden just before 7 p.m., Oct. 10, was struck by a minivan that came around the corner and was unable to stop before colliding with her.

According to Camden Police Sgt. Dan Brown, Sarah Carlson, of Nebraska, had parked her vehicle near the Village Green and proceeded to cross Chestnut Street diagonally toward Camden National Bank, approximately 15 feet from the crosswalk.

At that moment, a minivan, operated by Sarah Chatfield, of Florida and Lincolnville, was turning right off of Elm Street onto Chestnut.

Chatfield did not see Carlson and her husband and Carlson was subsequently struck by a glancing blow from the minivan, which knocked her down, police said.

Brown said the night was dark, and streetlights were ineffective, given that the tree cover that blocked illumination.

Immediately, a small crowd came to Carlson’s assistance, along with an ambulance from North East Mobile Health Services, and Engine 4 of the Camden Fire Department.

Carlson complained of pain to her hip and foot, and was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Concerned locals followed her to the hospital, including Chatfield.

The Nebraska couple had been on their way to Bar Harbor, but given the circumstances, they were offered several alternate places to spend the night, as well as dinner, by those who came to her assistance in downtown Camden.

There were no charges, and Brown said witnesses noted that Carlson was not walking in the crosswalk.
