ROCKLAND — A mother and son from Rome remain in the Knox County Jail for allegedly stealing two guns, estimated to be worth over $45,000, from a Rockport man.

Tara Bellavance, 43, and her son, Alexander Lane, 27, were both arrested Dec. 4 and charged with theft.

They made their initial appearances Dec. 6 in Knox County Unified Court. Bail was set at $5,000 cash for Bellavance and $1,500 cash for Lane.

According to the affidavit filed in court by Maine State Police, the pair were arrested for allegedly stealing the guns from a Rockport home. The guns were a Wesley Richards 12-gauge, side-by-side shotgun valued at more than $25,000 more than 40 years ago and a Parker side-by-side 20-gauge shotgun, valued at $20,000.

Bellavance and Lane were arrested for the thefts of the guns in Rockport following an investigation by state police of other guns stolen in Rome, according to police.

The owner of the guns in Rockport told police that he was unaware that they had been stolen.

Police said that the guns were pawned at Coastal Trading and Pawn in Auburn and then were resold to other parties. Lane received $9,675 for selling the two guns, according to the court document.

Rockport Sgt. Jim Moore also assisted with the investigation.

Bellevance and Lane will appear in court again Jan. 25.
