OWLS HEAD — Owls Head Transportation Museum and Mid-Coast School of Technology partner to build Model T, vehicle to be offered for sale August 16.

Education is on the front burner at the Owls Head Transportation Museum and the culmination of one very special project exemplifies the museum’s ongoing effort to engage youth in the preservation and conservation of antique automobiles.

During the 2013/ 2014 school year OHTM partnered with the Mid-Coast School of Technology to construct one of America’s most iconic cars, a Ford Model T, using parts donated to the museum. The completed vehicle will be offered for sale at the 37th Annual New England Auto Auction on August 16, all proceeds from the sale of the vehicle will benefit museum-sponsored education programs both on and offsite.

With the assistance of instructors at the Mid-Coast School of Technology and the oversight of museum Ground Vehicle Conservator Warren Kincaid, high school students were tasked with building the wooden body for the Model T Express Pickup. Back in museum’s ground vehicle workshop, staff and volunteers worked on the mechanical assemblage. Completion of the project took approximately six-months.

“We are honored to work with the talented students at the Mid-Coast School of Technology. The successful bidder on this exciting vehicle will surely enjoy many wonderful miles in all the while knowing that this Model T is representative of embracing a new generation of auto enthusiasts by igniting a passion and curiosity that extends to these pieces of moving history. By getting youth involved and sharing our knowledge we are helping to ensure a bright future for the collector car hobby. I couldn’t be happier with this pilot project and I look forward to exploring many additional opportunities for educational partnership,” said Executive Director Russ Rocknak.

The 1914 Model T Express Pickup will be offered for sale at no reserve alongside up to 200 high-quality vehicles. For more information about the auction or the Model T project visit owlshead.org or call Owls Head Transportation Museum Public Relations Director Jenna Lookner at (207) 594-4418..
