VASSALBORO — It has been a whirlwind of emotions for Nick Mazurek, a junior golfer at Oceanside High School, and his family the past few days.

After unexpectedly losing his cousin, Taylor Mazurek, Wednesday, Oct. 15, Oceanside High School junior Nick Mazurek hit the greens of Vassalboro’s Natanis Golf Course to battle for the Class A schoolboy state individual championship Saturday, Oct. 18.

A few days later on Saturday, Oct. 18, in a match that was dedicated to Taylor, Nick Mazurek brought the Class A schoolboy individual state championship trophy back to Rockland and in the process, qualified for the New England Golf Championships for the second straight year.

Nick shot an even 72 on the day to claim the victory.

“He was three-over after [the first] nine,” according to Jenn Mazurek, Nick’s mother. “Then, [he] shot three-under on the second nine. He kept his composure and sunk a birdie putt on the last hole to win.”

When asked to give a quote about the victory, Nick said, “Well, I had a really good day.”

The new state champion also noted that it was “extra special to win today” since he “dedicated the round to my cousin who passed away Wednesday.”

A GoFundMe fundraiser in memory of Taylor Mazurek, who was a third-year honors student at Drury University in Missouri and is formerly of Rockland, was started late Wednesday and has raised $1,585 of the $2,000 goal as of 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.

A description on the fundraiser’s page read: “In loving memory of Taylor... We love you so much and you will be missed by so many. We are blessed to know you. You are the sweetest angel. The Kappa Delta's hope to raise this money to go to Taylor's family to help with any costs for her funeral services. Thank you all for the support.”

As a sophomore competing in the same tournament he just won, but in 2013, the young Mariner shot a 76 and fell one stroke short of tying for the state championship and instead settled for a second place tie.

When not playing golf, Nick plays basketball and baseball for the Mariners and also plays baseball for The First, the Rockland-based American Legion baseball team.

Taylor’s other local cousin is Alexis Mazurek, a sophomore at Oceanside who plays field hockey, basketball and softball for the Mariners, while also playing travel field hockey for the Maine Majestix, a Waterville-based club.
