Margaret H. Calderwood, obituary

ROCKLAND - Margaret H. Calderwood 91, known to her friends as Peggy, died peacefully Oct. 24, 2015, at Quarry Hill in Camden.

Born in Rockland on July 23, 1924, she was the daughter of Francis E. and Edna Kennedy Havener. Educated in local schools, she was a 1942 graduate of Rockland High School, and graduated from Fisher College in Boston.

On July 3, 1947, she married Donald N. Calderwood of Union. The couple made their home in Rockland all their married lives. Don passed away Oct. 23, 1993.

She served many years as guidance secretary and secretary to the principal at Rockland District High School, where she took great fulfillment in her care of the students.

She was a longtime active member of the Pratt Memorial Methodist church and Aldersgate Methodist Church. Always happy to serve and help in any capacity she could, she served on many committees, sang in the choir and was a member of the Women's Club.

Margaret was always active in and loved her community. She loved spending time at the family cottage on Sebec Lake and socializing with many lake friends in the Dover-Foxcroft area.

She enjoyed traveling to Europe and Canada to visit her daughter and family at their military postings.

In addition to her husband, Margaret was predeceased by brothers, Francis E. Havener Jr. and Richard Havener; and a sister, Norma Worley.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Robert A. and Jan W. Calderwood of Rockport, and Beverlie A. and Alan A. Smith of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; her sister, Beverly Sterrett of Mifflintown, Pa.; six grandchildren and their spouses, Robert A. Jr and Michelle Calderwood of Rocky River, Ohio, Stephen B. and Lt. Col. LeaAnn Calderwood of Alconberry RAF, England, Timothy S. and Heather Calderwood of Allston, Mass., Bryan T. and Tammy Calderwood of South Thomaston, Michael A. and Jody Smith of Brooklyn, Ontario, Canada, and D. Andrew and Sarah Smith of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; her step-grandchildren, Brent Meservey and his wife, Georgia, of Thomaston, and Ashley L. Meservey of Rockport; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerick St. in Rockland. The Rev. Peter Remick will officiate. A reception will follow at the funeral home's 104 Limerock reception center. Private interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden.
