BELFAST — A Township man was indicted on multiple counts by a Waldo County Grand Jury Sept. 13, stemming from a high speed chase with Belfast Police.

Tommy Hufford, 41, was indicted on charges including: eluding an officer, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, criminal operating under the influence, criminal speeding, driving to endanger, refusing to submit to arrest, and criminal threatening.

Hufford was arrested July 20, after leading Belfast Police on a high speed chase that continued for over 14 miles, from downtown Belfast to Montville, according to Belfast Police Chief Michael McFadden.

He initially came to the attention of police after reporting his vehicle stolen, though it was found by officers a short time later in roughly the same area that Hufford said he parked it. He was warned by officers at that time not to drive anywhere due to his intoxication.

Hufford drove away from the area a short time later and was immediately pursued by police.

In addition to speeds reaching up to 90 mph during the chase, Hufford turned off the vehicle’s headlights for much of the 11:00 p.m. incident. The vehicle also crossed the center lines multiple times, requiring some drivers to enter the breakdown lane to avoid a collision.

Hufford eventually pulled over in Montville and was taken into custody, where an Intoxilyzer test showed his blood alcohol content at .14%.
