BELFAST — A West Rockport man has been charged with several crimes following a traffic stop in Belfast Oct. 25.

Laudelino S. Cruz, 58, was charged with operating under the influence and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child as a result of the incident.

Cruz first came to the attention of law enforcement after a concerned motorist reported the vehicle traveling ahead of them was operating erratically. The caller stated the vehicle in question, which was headed toward Belfast, was repeatedly swerving across the center lines and back into the own breakdown lane.

The vehicle, traveling on Route 1, was intercepted in Belfast by Deputy Jeff Rice, of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office. After traveling behind the vehicle for a short time Rice observed the same erratic driving originally reported.

After initiating a traffic stop, it was determined that Cruz was allegedly operating under the influence with two juveniles in the vehicle with him, resulting in the charges of endangerment.

Cruz is expected to appear in court Dec. 22.
