YARMOUTH — Lucille Bertha Allen died May 2, 2016, at the age of 91, after a 16-year progression of Alzhiemer’s disease.

Lucille was born in Camden on Sept. 10, 1924, and attended Camden schools. She went on to earn her registered nursing degree from the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary, in the class of 1945. Throughout her life, she used her nursing skills to care for many family members in her home, while raising her own family. Later, Lucille was employed as the head nurse at Whitehaven Nursing Home in Portland. The Allen Room and The Clemons Room at Whitehaven were named and dedicated to her and her sister, Vilma, who also worked there. In addition, Lucille did some private duty nursing care.

Lucille was a devoted mother and wife. She and her husband, Edgar, enjoyed dancing, camping, hunting, fishing and water sports. They both spent the summers with their children at their Little Sebago Lake camp, teaching them how to swim, boat, fish and water ski.

Lucille was an active member of the Legion Auxillary in Falmouth and Belfast, the Maine Eye And Ear Infirmary Alumni Association, the Tranquility Grange and the United Christian Church in Lincolnville. After retirement, Lucille and Edgar moved to Belfast and had a camp on Pitcher Pond, where Lucille water-skied until she was 70, and made her famous blueberry cake, muffins and pancakes for all who came to visit. She spent many fun summers on Pitcher Pond with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

It was fortunate that Lucille and Edgar were able to spend a few years in their retirement traveling to Arizona, Florida, California, Hawaii, and Turks and Caicos Islands. Lucille loved the warm temperatures and the activties, especially dancing and swimming.

Lucille was predeceased by her two sons, Russel Basil Allen and Stephen R. Allen; and Edgar, her husband of 64 years. She will be remembered by her three surviving children, Madalienne Lucille and her husband, Laurence A. Rowell, Patricia Ines Hird, and Brian Edgar Allen and his wife, Julie; her grandchildren, Marney Mongillo and Eryn Neville, Chad Bowdoin and Robert Edgar Bowdoin, and Brandon Allen, Canica (Allen), Brian Jeffrey Allen and Chesea (Allen) Small; by Stephen's wife, Susan, and their children, Shellina, Shannon, Shawna and Stephen Allen, Will Jordan and Jennifer Elliott. Lucille is also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Lucille will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, her sister, Vilma Clemons, her Uncle Joe and Aunt Carol, her nieces and nephews, close friends and neighbors. She will be lovingly remembered on this earth as one of God's caring souls.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 21 at 3 p.m.  at United Christian Church in Lincolnville. Burial will follow at Upper Cemetery on Heal Road in Lincolnville. Refreshments will be shared after the burial in the church hall.

In Lucille's memory, donations can be made to either United Christian Church, Lincolnville Center, ME 04850 or the Alzheimer's Association, National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave. FL17, Chicago, IL 60601 (alz.org).

Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home.
