WASHINGTON — E. Louise Cole, 91, died peacefully March 29, 2015, surrounded by her family, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Born May 29, 1923, in Rockland, she was the daughter of Leon O. and Myrtle A. Pendleton Callahan. She started school in Long Cove and later attended Rockland schools.

Louise had a varied working career, but most enjoyed her time as a waitress at the Rockland Hotel and teaching sewing classes at the Singer Sewing Center in Rockland. She had a home-based dressmaking business for many years.

After moving to Nantucket in the 1960s, she owned and operated the Dolphin Guest House for 15 years, and returned to Maine in 1980. She and her husband, Millard, also lived in East Machias, but resided in Washington for the past 10 years.

A self-taught seamstress, she loved to sew, knit and do crafts of all types She never needed a pattern. If she saw it, she could make it. She enjoyed quilting and making keepsakes for grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to cook, making the best (and biggest) donuts, and she often took pies and cakes to friends and family, as well as treating them to her renown fudge.

She was a lover of all flowers and gardening, but roses and lilacs were her favorites. She enjoyed taking visitors on a tour of her gardens and waiting for her blooms in spring and summer brought her great joy.

Louise had a caring and giving heart, and was incredibly devoted to her family and friends.

Loved and sorely missed by her family, Louise is survived by her husband, Millard of Washington; her children, Mary Lou Rumbarger and husband, Gene, of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., Alice Wallace and her husband, Raymond, of Owls Head, Millard “Randy” Cole Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Zelma Williams and her husband, David, of Washington; 10 grandchildren, Barbara Thompson, Peter Wallace, Mark Wallace, Lauri Wallace-Scott, Timothy Wallace, Millard R. Cole III, Manetta Cole Treat, Tamar Cole Robinson and Melanie Leo-Daigle; 14 great-grandchildren, Aislyn Jenkins, Patrick, Alexander and Benjamin Wallace, Jared and Emily Scott, Alan, Mackenzie and Brenner Cole, and Ashlin, Julia, Leah, Maelin and Naomi Jo Treat; two great great-grandchildren, Teagan and Kylie Jenkins; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Karen Thompson.

Louise was the sixth of seven children. She is survived by her sister, Mary Rose of East Hampton, Conn.; and she was predeceased by her brothers, Sheridan, Richard, Clyde and Malcolm; and her sister, Evelyn.

A graveside service will be held Friday, June 5 at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Warren. Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to Gary's House, 97 State St., Portland, ME 04101.
