BELFAST— As Penobscot Shores' Enrichment Series continues, local botanist, photographer, and educator Wanda Garland will present "Spring and Summer Wildflowers in Maine" on Wednesday, August 23 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Penobscot Shores.

Garland's colorful slides depicting wild blooms in all their glory will be the centerpiece of the educational program. Garland will also offer insights into the many surprising ways Maine's wildflowers have been used for food, medicine, and fiber.

Growing up on a dairy farm in Aroostook County in the 1940s and 1950s, Garland learned from her parents how to identify the flowers and trees growing in the woods and fields around their home as well as their traditional uses as handed down by generations of native peoples. "We were so connected," she recalls. "Our lives followed the flow of seasons."

With programs designed to educate, inspire and connect older adults, admission to all Penobscot Shores' Enrichment Series programs is free, but registration is required. To sign up, please contact Penobscot Shores at 338-2332.
