Lions squeak out victory over Lincoln Academy

BELFAST — It all came down to if Belfast freshman Stanley Sturgis could connect on his four free throw opportunities in the final 50 seconds of the Belfast versus Lincoln Academy boys basketball contest on Tuesday night. 

And, after nailing three-of-four in the span of the final 50 seconds, for a total of 5-of-6 in the fourth quarter, the Lions were chalking up a 63-60 victory. 

Belfast was up 15-13 after one, 36-27 after two and tied with Lincoln Academy at 36 after three. 

Scoring for the Lions were Steven Davis (24 points), Nolan Woods (12 points), Sturgis (eight points), Levi Lapham and Zavier Roman (six each), Zane Bielenberg (three), Garrett Hamlin and Zeke Ventura (two each). 

Sturgis also had five assists and two steals, while Lapham had two steals and two assists, Roman two assists and a steal, Hamlin three rebounds, an assists and three steals, Woods had four rebounds, Ambrosehad three rebounds, an assist and a steal and Davis had 12 rebounds, four steals and two blocks. 

Leading scorers for Lincoln Academy were Cole Leeman (15 points) and Devin Schere (13 points). 

Belfast connected on 17-of-22 free throws, while Lincoln Academy was 6-of-10. 

It's great to get that first win, especially when it comes against a quality team like Lincoln Academy,” said Lions head coach Marty Messer. “Although we struggled a little in the forth quarter, this game proved to ourselves that we can win the close ones.”
