Linwood A. Curry Sr., obituary

CAMDEN — Linwood Arlen "Bud" Curry Sr., 85, died Jan. 24, 2016, at Anderson Inn, Quarry Hill, in Camden. Born in Rockland on July 20, 1930, he was the son of Lockhart and Burnly Francis "Bun" (Vinyl) Curry.

Linwood attended Rockland District High School, graduating in the Class of 1948. Throughout his school years, Linwood worked on his family's farm and was a member of the Glee Club.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Upon his return, Bud attended the Maine Vocational Technical Institute, at the decommissioned Fort Preble site, in South Portland.

On March 24, 1955, he married Annie Jeanette Herrick in Portland. They were married for 46 years.

The Currys lived in Owls Head for 29 years, where they were members of the Owls Head Baptist Church. Linwood worked as a lineman/installer for the New England Telephone Company, taught Sunday school, was a skilled woodworker, loved being with family and working in his gardens. For many years, the Curry's maintained a produce stand that served the Owls Head community. In addition, Linwood also helped out at his family's greenhouse in Rockland. In 1997, they moved to Camden, at which time they took up fishing. They loved to travel and photographed animals and nature throughout the state of Maine.

In recent years, Linwood was a member of the Grange, where he served as treasurer. He attended the South Liberty Baptist Church, enjoyed studying the Bible and was an avid reader.

Linwood was predeceased by his wife, Annie Curry in 2001; his son, Linwood A. "Rusty" Curry Jr. in 2008; his sisters, Lorraine Niemi and Kathryn Blackington in 2007; and his stepdaughter, Karen Winchenbach in 2014. Surviving are his children, Brian Curry and his wife, Wendy, of Weare, N.H., and Stephanie Carpenter and her husband, Scot, of Tampa, Fla.; his brother, Dennis of Grand Forks, N.D.; two stepsons, Philip Sweetland and his wife, Loretta, of Searsmont and Charles Sweetland and his wife, Melody, of Liberty; his step son-in-law, Eugene Winchenbach of Appleton; one grandchild, Jazmyn; and six step-grandchildren, Lisa Dawn, Larry, Heidi, Tammy, Timmy and Tonya; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; Michael Perrier and his wife and son of New York; and his dear friend, Joyce Sweetland.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, Feb. 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain Street, Camden. A graveside service in Achorn Cemetery in Rockland will be announced later.
