CAMDEN — A woman from Montana was struck by a van in a Camden crosswalk late Saturday morning, sending her to the hospital with injuries to her arm.

Camden Police officer Brook Hartshorn is investigating the accident that occurred around 11:30 a.m. Nov. 2, when Connie Melashenko, 61, of Great Falls, Mont., was attempting to cross Elm Street at the Village Green, walking toward the town office and Camden Opera House.

According to Camden officer Allen Weaver Jr., Melashenko said that one car passed through the crosswalk before she stepped into it and when she proceeded forward, she was struck by Peter Murphy, 65, of Lincolnville, who was driving north.

Murphy was driving a 2005 Chevrolet van and told police he couldn’t stop in time to avoid hitting Melashenko.

“Melanshenko said she stopped and waited for a car to go by then stepped out into the crosswalk and was hit,” said Weaver. “Murphy and another witness both said she stepped out in front of his car without really looking or hesitating.”

Weaver said Melanshenko sustained a broken elbow and wrist. She was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center by a North East Mobile Health ambulance. Camden Fire Department also responded to the scene and traffic was backed up to at least Union Street.

Weaver said the investigation continues and at this point, no charges have been filed.
