BELFAST— Lillian York, 95, of Belfast, died Feb. 25, 2017, quietly in her home. She was born in Belfast on May 11, 1921, the oldest daughter of Charlie and Nellie (Buzzell) Walker.

She married Bernest A. York on May 14, 1934. To this union were born six children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernest Sr. (March 10, 2005); her son, Bernest “Buzzy” York Jr. (June 18, 1980); and her daughter, Charline Hurd (Oct. 28, 2013).

Lillian was a devoted mother and home-maker throughout her life. Her family was the center of her world, and family gatherings were her greatest joy. The consummate hostess, she always made sure everyone felt welcome and had plenty to eat.

Lillian was deeply religious, and loved gospel music, poetry and gardening. She regularly surprised and amazed family with her ability to quote scriptures and poems from memory. Lillian lived her Christian faith daily, and filled her life with sharing love, kindness and hospitality.

She was employed for several years by The Pants Factory and Truitt Brothers Shoe Factory.

She is survived by her children, Florence (Richard) Yeaton of Belfast, Maxine Smirles of Somersworth, N.H., David York (David North) of Indian Head, Md., and Harold York of Belfast. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren; and a host of great- and great-great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.

The viewing will be Thursday, March 2, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Riposta Funeral, 182 Waldo Ave. in Belfast, followed by Celebration of Life Service at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David K. North officiating. Spring interment will be at Grove Cemetery.
