Letter to the editor: Tribute to Charlie Cawley

Wed, 11/18/2015 - 7:15pm

A tribute to a man, who was the founder and CEO of MBNA, and spent years of his life making Camden, Rockland and Belfast better places in which to live. He was a gentleman who gave young people and others great jobs and expected them to dress showing respect for themselves and others.

He sent many to college by his generous scholarships, and taught them an important lesson in volunteering to help those in need.

He shared his antique collection of automobiles for the parades in Camden.

Had it not been his vision we would not have the lovely Opera House restored to its original design, nor the wonderful Centennial Wing at the Camden Public Library, that is used every day by many.

The Knox Woolen Mill was restored after it closed, from being a fire hazard to a place of beauty and employment for many. A museum was created there as a memory for so many, who had called that place of employment, their home.

He saved the first piece of fire equipment that Camden purchased after the Great Fire of Camden and enclosed it in a glass case for all to enjoy. He painted and planted many properties, so the local towns were looking much better.  He did things that the municipalities and we tax payers could not afford to do.

This list could go on for pages due to the generosity of a quiet man, named Charlie Cawley, who has left this planet for a better place. Rest in Peace, Charlie.

Barbara F. Dyer lives in Camden.
