Letter to the editor: Thanks from Herring Gut Learning Center

Mon, 09/08/2014 - 11:30am

Fall is in the air and another year of school has begun. Thank you to all of our friends, neighbors and supporters for another fabulous summer at Herring Gut.

The Silent Art Auction at the Highlands Coffee House in Thomaston was a wonderful gathering in support of our mission. The night had a beautiful spirit and of course beautiful artwork. Special thank you to our sponsors: Blue Tulip, Camden National Bank, Dowling Walsh Gallery, Haynes Galleries, O'Hara Corporation, Primrose Framing, St. George Realty, Stonefish and to Mr. Fred Kellogg for the incredible painting he donated to our raffle.

The Herring Gut Summer Camp brought elementary and middle school students around to explore the local ecosystems and discover the wonders of the marine science in our own backyard. The fourth year of the First Work Experience program gave 20 local teens a first job experience and some spending money. Please see the article in Down East magazine's July 2014 issue. It's a wonderful portrayal of this highly successful program and we are thankful to Down East for seeing the value in it as well.

Finally, our Saltwater Series Family Nights brought together children, parents and grandparents to learn about marine science. They were diverse and interesting and we loved sharing our knowledge with you. Needless to say with all of this activity going on we have been very busy but wanted to pause for a moment to say thank you. You helped to make it all a success and we are extraordinarily grateful.

Happy fall!
