Letter to the editor: Rockport library parking a critical issue

Thu, 10/30/2014 - 1:45pm

As you may be aware a 10-sample Rockport Library Parking Survey was done in October. Maine Mom, an anonymous writer who is very familiar with the library, has written me with various questions and suggestions concerning the survey.

On average this survey showed three empty parking spaces within one step of library property. At the very busiest times there were always at least two empty spaces. The handicapped space was also unoccupied during each survey sample. Within a 60-second walk, and crossing no more than one street there were, on average, 47 empty parking spaces available.

In Maine Mom’s most recent letter she stated that the children’s after-school program on Wednesday afternoon is the busiest time for the library, and although I had purposefully taken samples at other busy times I had missed this one.

In response to her suggestion I took an additional sample at her recommended time. She is correct in that it is the busiest time for the library. Even at that busiest time for those mothers with any physical difficulties there were three empty parking spots within 1 step of library property. There were another 42 spaces available within 60 seconds, and many more if you add one minute to the walk.

Maine Mom and the other proponents of a much larger library and parking lot have always mentioned the “parking problem” right away as a justification for a new library. Previous information given to us on parking appears to lack documentation and credibility.

To regain credibility I hope the Library Committee will refrain from using the “parking problem” as justification for their large project until they engage a professional firm to prepare a survey of the parking. This firm should be completely independent of the Town, the Library, and the Library Committee.

After the election I hope our community can find a way to come together for the sake of our library.
