Letter to the editor: Rockport library and next steps

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 4:15pm

Members of the Friends of Rockport, a group of Rockport citizens who support keeping the Rockport Library at its current location, will attend tomorrow's (Jan. 20) meeting of the Rockport Library Committee. Two newsworthy actions will take place at the meeting.

1. A proposal from Steve Podganjy, Executive Director at the Portland Public Library, for creation of a case statement putting forth the need for a significant improvement of the Town
library services will be heard by the Library Committee. A public Q&A period will follow Mr. Podgajny's presentation. The Library Committee is intending to pay Mr. Podgajny
approximately $4,000 for this initial research.

2. The Friends of Rockport will request, during public comment, that any needs assessment for a library in Rockport be made "site specific" to the current library site, and will announce that a warrant has been put before the Rockport Select Board for a ballot question allowing voters, very specifically, to voice their opinion about the location of the library.

The warrant question will ask the voters to approve that "any reconstruction, expansion, improvement, renovation, or replacement of the Rockport Public Library be limited to its current location at 1 Limerock Street. (Neither of the Library Committee's articles in the past November election directly addressed the question of keeping the library at its current site, although the vote on both suggested clearly that this was the preference of a large majority of voters. So this "site specific" request, along with the warrant proposal to the Select Board is being made with the knowledge and support of a large group of Rockport residents.)

Rockport's Library Committee meets tomorrow, Tues. Jan. 20th, at 5pm, in the Richardson Room of the Rockport Town Office.

Sally Cook lives in Rockport.
