Letter to the editor: This Rockland business owner supports the Resolution

Mon, 03/06/2017 - 12:00pm

I live in Rockland and co-own a business on Main Street, and I am writing to show support of the original Resolution of Commitment to Promoting an Open, Respectful, Healthy Community. I grew up in Warren and have seen the city of Rockland transform from fish processing center to thriving arts and business community.

This moment in time is pivotal for our city, and the Resolution protects the communities that make Rockland a place I am proud to call home.

It is vital for the city to show support of LGBTQ folks, who are more likely to be jobless, homeless, and pushed to the margins. Youth, especially must feel safe at school and on the streets of our town.

Within Knox County, I see Rockland as the most supportive place for those with with mental and physical disabilities. As the city grows, let it continue to make space for them.

One of my favorite reasons for living here is the combination of city blocks and access to nature. Protecting the environment of the city of Rockland, and setting an example to the rest of the county, will do nothing but good.

The city must find a place for immigrant communities, whether it be a family that has lost everything and is looking for refuge, or one that chose to start a new life in Maine.

My friends and family ask me why I like living in Rockland and I tell them that it is because it has such potential for growth. I want to ensure that the changes that inevitably face this city will be positive for all citizens.

Please know that this resident and business owner supports the full resolution, and will always stand as an advocate for its principles.
