Letter to the editor: Camden’s wooden boat builders were perfectionists

Fri, 07/10/2015 - 12:15pm

Barbara Dyer’s article “Camden’s wooden boat builders were perfectionists,” posted June 24 2015, includes a photograph of Geerd Hendel and William Petersen with an “unidentified man” holding a model of a ketch. That man is another perfectionist, Jay S. Hanna, of Rockport, a long-time professional modelmaker. His models are held in the nautical collections of the Smithsonian Museum, Mariner’s Museum and Maine Maritime Museum, among many other pubic and private collections.

Jay is the author of The Shipcarver’s Handbook: How to Design and Execute Traditional Marine Carvings (Wooden Boat Publications; 3rd edition, May 1, 1988).

Susan Hanna is professor emeritus of marine economics at Oregon State University, and the daughter of Jay Hanna.
